PodCulture 56: Living La Vida Geek

The Culture Crew welcomes Ryan back for yet another episode of fun and frolic geekstyle!

We open this week with what we’ve been up to, and for Brad and Christina that means the season finale of Doctor Who. The reviews range from flimsy to fantastic, but they’re both anticipating the companion-swapping season 4. Glenn’s been watching Buck Rogers, and we marvel at how 30 years can’t change cheese.

Geek Cuisine is wonderfully provided by David, in the form of Dark Chocolate 3 Musketeers bars! Thanks so very much, David!

Geek ‘n’ Tell finds us axle deep in Transformers! Glenn’s picked up the Unleashed Figure of Bumblebee, The Batman matchbox car, and the Marvel Legends Icons figure of Doctor Doom. Ryan, having finally completed his Transformers collection, comes away with only a keychain. Christina and Brad expand their collection several fold with a handful of figures, including Ironhide, Starscream, Arcee, and the Micro Machine figures. They’ve also collected a Captain America (For President!) shirt, and an Autobot symbol shirt. Brad has given a home to the Battlestar Galactica novel entitled Unity, and the complete (short lived) series Point Pleasant.
Guilty Pleasures is a duet this week, as Ryan and Glenn review Escape from Galaxy 3! We dare you not to be morbidly curious about this one!

Thank you very much to Emily From Ohio, with her call-in review of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer!

Promos this time around come from the Podiobook novel “Heaven – Season Three: Earth“, The 9th-A Heroescast, and from Indiana Jim with his Things Are Looking Up podcast.

PodCulture 55: The Summer Movie Special

Click your seatbelts and hold on tight, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride as The PodCulture Crew are joined by their friend, Ryan, for the Summer Movie Special!

Brad and Christina enjoyed their 4th of July with a double dose of sci-fi, seeing Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Transformers, Glenn has spent more time working than he’d like, and Ryan is in town from New York.

Glenn and Ryan review Live Free Die Hard, which opens up a discussion about MPAA ratings, and how they’ve been approached by movie makers, and how we’ve evolved as an audience. Although they haven’t seen it yet, Christina laments the lack of Alan Rickman, and Brad’s interest is piqued by the cameo by Kevin Smith.

All four have seen Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer, and enjoyed it, but there were some nit-picks by the boys. Despite the eye candy of Jessica Alba, they dislike the portrayal of Doctor Doom. The guys disagree with the avoidance of Galactus and speculate the character decisions, but all agree that Laurence Fishburne’s talent shone through the silver.

There’s no disguising the blockbuster hit, Transformers, and we all loved it. The boys, having liked the cartoon as a kid, were suspicious before the release, but came out wonderfully impressed. Christina, who already enjoyed Shia LaBeouf in Constantine, loved it. We talk about the crossover with G.I. Joe, special effects, military portrayal, Michael Bay, the soundtrack and just about everything else under the hood of this summer hit.

Promos include Cup Car Update, and musical guest is Luke Ski with “The Ballad of Optimus Prime”. Transform and roll out!
